NMFWRI at Highlands U Research Day

NMFWRI was proud to participate in New Mexico Highland University’s 23rd annual Research Day. held April 17. 

Among the posters presented, NMFWRI Research Associate Dr. Nate Tomczyk presented his study on targets for wildfire-promoted forest resilience. One of Dr Tomczyk’s students, Abraham Brown, presented a poster on using remote sensing tools to understand the effects of weather on wildfires. 

NMFWRI’s Ecological Monitoring Specialist Emily Yannayon presented a poster on “Forest Health and Recovery on Long-term Monitoring Sites 3 years after the Hermit Peak Calf Canyon Wildfire” that she and program manager Kathryn Mahan co-authored using 18 years of monitoring data. 

Emily, Kathryn, and monitoring program staff Michael Branch, Alex Withnall, Corey Beinhart, Vincent Vispo and Andrew Persante also contributed to a poster lead by NMHU Assistant Professor Blanca Cespedes, titled “Relearning Good Fire by Respecting Landscapes: Student Workforce Training and Monitoring in Collaborative Prescribed Burns.”

Monitoring Technician Aide Taryn Schlosser presented their own poster on gaps in herbarium data collection, supported by their work with Professor Dr. Marine Foucher.
