As part of Earth Week at New Mexico Highlands University, the NMHU Forestry

Department and NMFWRI co-hosted an interactive event celebrating forests and watersheds on April 25. The Seed to Tree, Mountains to River event featured hands-on activities from a dozen partners who taught more than 100 elementary students and two dozen community members about seed balls, bark beetles, wildlife, defensible space, and the process used to collect and clean seed cones. The Las Vegas Tree Board joined the event to celebrate National Arbor Day, handing out free tree seedlings while Las Vegas Mayor David Romero made an Arbor Day proclamation. Partners at the event included Forest Stewards Guild, Tierra y Montes Soil and Water Conservation Service, NM Forestry Division, NMSU Ag Extension, Hermit’s Peak Watershed Alliance, NM Department of Game and Fish, USFS, Rio Mora National Wildlife Refuge, NM Wild, and Mora-San Miguel Electric Cooperative.
