NMFWRI staff and director Dr. Alan Barton joined more than a dozen other organizations to provide interactive learning about forest health, land restoration techniques, and more at booths during Forestry Day, hosted by the John T. Harrington Forestry Research Center in Mora.
The event was well attended by people of all ages. The event was organized by Dr. Owen Burney, NMSU professor and director of the JTH Forestry Research Center.
Shantini Ramakrishnan, founder and program manager of the Conservation Science Center and Querencia in Action land restoration workshops, used carved wood cutouts of rivers to demonstrate how rocks and logs can be used to create low-tech and effective structures to reduce erosion, especially after wildfires. She was helped at the booth by Raymundo Melendez, Outreach and Education assistant and Hank Blackwell, director of the Wildfire Resiliency Training Center at Luna Community College. NMFWRI director Dr. Alan Barton helped out and took photos!
