UWC Students Pilot Citizen Science Survey

On January 16, a cohort of 28 students and teachers from United World College spent their “Expeditionary Friday” at NMHU. In a coordinated effort with the Dept. of Forestry, the
NMFWRI and the Highlands University Forestry Dept hosted 28 students from United World College for a workshop at NMHU. Here, Dr. Blanca Cespedes give students an overvirew of dendrochronology.
Conservation Science Center started the day with an in-classroom overview of post-fire restoration workshops, including an initiative to develop user-friendly citizen science surveys for landowners to contribute towards regular monitoring of their own land rehabilitation efforts. The students piloted a version of the survey related to estimating area of plants when the distribution is uneven and spotty, tested the accuracy of plant identification when photos and descriptions are provided, and gave useful insights on accessibility of language used in the survey questions and the pacing of the survey. Students were also introduced to the field of Dendrochronology with Dr. Blanca Cespedes, Associate Professor of Forestry.
