Stewardship

The New Mexico Forest and Watershed Restoration Institute partners with landowners, schools, communities, tribes, nonprofits and agencies to bridge and share scientific and traditional knowledge in adaptive forest and watershed management. These partnerships – with people of all ages, backgrounds and experiences – help build capacity, knowledge and skills in land-based communities and develop the next generation of natural resource leaders.  Projects fall under two primary programs: The Education and Outreach program and the Conservation Science Center, which houses the Conservation and Restoration Education program. Following the 2022 Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon wildfire, NMFWRI staff also added post-fire land restoration programs and projects. In 2024, they are working to expand those programs.
